“Journey” is one of the more overused words in our modern vernacular. Contestants on “American Idol” don’t talk about competing on a talent show, they talk about being on their “journey.” Pop psychology has the “personal journey,” while pop religion offers the “spiritual journey.” When is one of Hollywood’s most recognized faces takes a personal journey in filmmaking, how does the “Industry” help determined the outcome?
At this week’s METal Event, Martin Sheen is our guest speaker. Martin Sheen has appeared in a wide variety of films ranging from the embarrassing to the sublime. In addition to appearing in numerous productions on stage, screen, and television, Sheen is the father of a modern dynasty of actors and a tireless activist for social and environmental causes, particularly homelessness.
This year the Film Academy has announced 265 features in contention for the best picture Oscar. One you may not have heard much about is, “The Way.” A family drama written and directed by Emilio Estevez and starring his father. Inspired by an experience Martin shared with Emilio’s son Taylor, it’s the story of the pilgrimage a father makes along the Camino de Santiago in Spain, after having his life jolted by the death of a wayward son.
