When you look at graffiti art, what crime do you see? The easy answer might be destruction of private property, like an artist superimposing his vision over a billboard ad. But what about theft of intellectual property by corporate advertisers? Consider this – artists in Los Angeles risk felony charges for creating murals without permit in our public spaces, yet over 4000 billboards are erected and maintained illegally in this city.
Come meet SABER and EKLIPS, two of the most famous (infamous in certain circles) graffiti artists in the world. They’ll talk about real street branding and how this dangerous obsession with expression helped create the successful brand, the Seventh Letter. Be prepared to have all of your preconceived notions about graff artists shattered.
Piper Wynn Severance is the project manager of the artist Saber and a Rights & Reproductions associate at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
