Doubling Down on Masculinity Lots of men in the 21st century are questioning their masculinity… They believe that they are weaker and less confident than more “manly” men. There is no shame feeling this way. There is a difference between being male and being a man. A male is something you are by birth. A man is something you have to become.
Our society puts a lot of expectations for men. We’re supposed to be tough, good providers, confident, decisive and rational. We’re supposed to be the rock in the relationship. The steady hand on the tiller. Fearless in the face of danger, and ready and able to protect at the drop of a hat.
So how to mix what today’s world expects and how to fulfill your quest of being a “real” man? It’ time to doubling down on being a masculine being, and being part of a pack of other men that form powerful tribes.
Philip Folsom has studied how the ever powerful wolf and its pack is a direct coloration to the masculine man and their tribe. Wolves hunting in a pack can understandably evoke feelings of fear and anxiety. However, it’s this very act of collaboration – working towards a common objective of self-preservation – as well as their complex community structure, and use of body language and howls to covey the rules of the pack, that causes us to pause and reflect on the magnitude of their intelligence and the depth of their emotions.
At this week’s METal Philip will share his insight on how today’s men need to use the skills of the wolf to live in today’s world.
