There has been tremendous growth in online video over the last 10 years, and it doesn’t show signs of slowing. Meanwhile the enabling technologies and business climate seem to change every year. There has been the rise of YouTube, the rise (and fall) of multichannel networks, and now multiple popular video platforms. Creators just want to create...so how can the creator be successful in online video with so much in flux? Brand spending is finally catching up with available video inventory, but it has become increasingly difficult to rise above the fold on YouTube. We are also at the dawn of the new art form of experience-based virtual and augmented reality. Where should a creator be focusing their energy? How can a creator continue to make a living doing what they love?
In this METal presentation we will explore the past, present, and future of what it takes to succeed in online video from the lens of the creator. From the past, there is much to be learned from the growing pains that YouTube has experienced and from the creators who rose to the top. Presently, there are many platforms beyond YouTube that a creator must navigate with new rules for success. And finally we’ll explore some of the exciting new VR/AR tools and resources coming available to creators in the next few years that will open up new creative possibilities for content and experiences.
Andy Stack not only had a front row seat to the online video revolution and the creators’ journey within it, but he also launched products and content that shaped the industry. He spent the last 6 years at YouTube as a product manager for YouTube Analytics, YouTube Partner Program, and the creator revenue-share calculation and payment system. Prior to YouTube, Andy started 4 companies and sold 3 to Yahoo!, FactSet and EPrize. He is currently starting up his 5th company: an interactive narrative studio uniting story and technology, doing for VR/AR what Pixar did for animated feature films. Andy has had an eclectic journey of mixing art, tech and business including a performance stint with the Blue Man Group and touring as a drummer in a jam band. He currently is chairman of The Alchemy, a non-profit artist community network.Join Report
