Beyond Recycling - Kevin Kumala

03182017 Beyond Recycling

Close to 9 million tons of plastic waste is discarded into our ocean annually. The majority of this waste is disposable plastic - typically utilized for no more than 30 minutes yet polluting our Mother Nature for much more than 30 years. While the slow trickle of education of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are being carried out by institutions, the world needs a faster solution as an Ellen MacArthur foundation report launched at the World Economic Forum just last year indicated that there will be more plastic waste than fish by 2050 unless the industry cleans up its act. To give a simple yet vivid illustration, Americans discard 1.5x the length of our Equator on a daily basis when it comes to plastic straw alone. REPLACE becomes the most effective solution and provides a direct impact without having to substantially alter consumer behavior.

Kevin Kumala is a social entrepreneur and evangelist of all things he is passionate about. With an educational background from the fields of biology, medical and also business management he is a true believer that frustration is truly the mother of invention. As an avid surfer and diver, frustration came in a form of seeing the dramatic changing landscape of Indonesia (in particular its beaches and oceans) which is drowning in plastic pollution which in turn provoked him to invent breakthrough solutions in striving for a cleaner and greener Earth.

Kevin sits as Chief Green Officer for Avani - a Bali-based eco-technology company focused in replacing disposable petroleum-based plastic by replacing them with eco-friendly products utilizing renewable resources. Its revolutionary product, bioplastic derived from industrial grade cassava starch, is biodegradable, compostable and recyclable while having also passed for Oral Toxicity Test certification. In addition, within just 60 days research has also proven that when the bioplastic ends up in aquatic environment, they will naturally break down and thereafter is safe for animals to consume.
