How to be an Entrepreneur in the Media Industry - Malcolm CasSelle

10012016 Malcolm CasSelle

How do companies doing the same thing for hundreds of years suddenly change direction and start making lots of money? Media and technology faces more change than ever and we all feel it as we use our phones to get the information we used to read in paper, watch on tv or listen to on the radio. This shift in spending and habit affects every industry today. Traditional media companies face increasing pressure from their shareholders to bring change and innovation to create, distribute and make money from their content. Newspaper publishers in particular face lower readership, subscription and print advertising revenues all the while people check their mobile phones over 100 times per day and digital advertising is bigger than ever.

Find out about the challenges tronc, formerly Tribune Publishing, faces and how it is bringing innovation to the LA Times, Chicago Tribune and many other of its papers to accelerate growth of digital revenues to the surprise of many. This talk will focus on how to change roles, processes, technologies without disrupting hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue while growing hundreds of millions of dollars more. Another title for this talk could be, "old dogs CAN learn new tricks."

Malcolm CasSelle, holds degrees in computer science from both MIT and Stanford University and has founded numerous tech companies during his career. His track record includes IPOs, trade sales and successful exits but more importantly lots of experimentation to find what works - or doesn't. He is currently President of New Ventures and CTO at tronc, formerly Tribune Publishing. tronc, Inc. owns the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, San Diego Union Tribune, and many other titles. His is also a YPO member in Bel Air, regularly contributes to local charities and participates in seed investing and mentorship to other entrepreneurs.
