Empathic Medicine - Dr. Jordan Shlain

02112017 Empathic Medicine

Over the centuries, new medical developments and techniques have changed the face of healthcare. The medical field has always brought together the best and brightest of society to help those in need. From treating cancer and delivering babies to dealing with heart attacks, doctors have developed technology and improved techniques.

The problem modern doctors face is a broken medical system and rigid insurance companies. They have managed to work through these difficulties to provide excellent patient care and successful new techniques. As biomedical research improves, doctors will be better at tackling health problems in a cost-effective way. The three main changes that are revolutionizing the medical field are electronic medical records, population science and clinical practice guidelines.

At this week's METal, Dr. Jordan Shlain will discuss the following:
— Understanding where we fit into the consumer-patient spectrum
— The non-medical determinants of health (family, money, stress, vanity, past)
— Understanding the nuance of empathy and listening in

Jordan Shlain has been featured in The Economist, The New York Times & Vogue for his pioneering efforts in the field of empathy, technology and how to design high quality healthcare that honors patients, doctors and data. Private Medical takes a holistic and proactive approach to personalized medicine that encompasses internal medicine, pediatrics and naturopathic medicine. Using his medical practice as a laboratory for developing new approaches to care, he founded Healthloop, a software company that enables physicians to follow up with their patients after surgery and cancer diagnosis. He is the founding member of the Institute of Responsible Nutrition which aims to highlight the metabolic corrosiveness in food as the proximate cause of type II diabetes in children.
